Review: Wallace and Gromit: Fright of the Bumblebees

Telltale games have announced their four part comic point and click adventures for the Wallace and Gromit Grand Adventures. The series episode names have also been released and they are as follows, Fright of the Bumblebees, The Last resort, Muzzled and The Bogey man. The launch of the first episode is ‘Fright of the Bumblebees’ and every month the other episodes will follow. The next three episodes of Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Adventures will launch on Xbox LIVE Arcade in the coming months. Telltale’s acclaimed Sam & Max games are also coming soon to Xbox LIVE Arcade.

Now, let us talk on this great game of the Wallace and Gromit series of Grand adventures with the ‘Fright of the Bumblebees’. You start off with Wallace, which after another crazy disaster, caused by one of his wacky inventions, in the name of ‘The Sniffer 3000’ which caused havoc in Mr. Paneer’s cheese shop, and has left Wallace with a very huge debt. Wallace never gives up, and with this he decides to start a new enterprise with, off course, a new invention. The enterprise in which he sets his sights on, are off course honey. And Mr. Paneer kills Wallace’s debt by ordering 50 gallons of his honey. Wallace immediately reassures Mr. Paneer that he will get his order by the end of the day. And hopefully earn the respect back, that he so meagerly lost. But will Wallace be able to conjure 50 gallons of sweet honey? Of course it’s possible to make so much honey, but it’s always up to Gromit to save the day.

All the characters have their own little personality, and you will surely make a lot of friends around West Wallaby Street. First you will meet up with Felicity who is the gardening fanatic neighbour of Wallace & Gromit, she has a wonderful array of flowers, will you get her to part with any of them? Or will she just annoy you with her cute garden squirrel pet. Officer Dibbins the West Wallaby police officer, and Major Crum, who helps you out so much, and Mr. Paneer who owns the cheese shop and also Edwina, and her grumpy husband own the newsagent shop in West Wallaby Street. The characters are all well constructed and they all have there own unique personality with great voice-overs.

The game is very well built, and it boasts incredible 3D graphics, which are almost as if you are watching a movie of Wallace and Gromit. A lot of detail has been taken to match the movements according to the television series, and they have managed to keep it to the same level. Both the eccentric inventor Wallace and his cynical canine Gromit are available as playable characters, and both are capable of stocking a seemingly endless inventory of items. Any item acquired is added to inventory, which can be quickly accessed and scrolled through with the touch of a button. The item can then be applied to different objects in the area to test for an effect. This makes much of the gameplay built around trial and error.

The hints for gathering items are given verbally by the characters, though they vary somewhat in terms of helpfulness. This is a good feature because it makes you interact more with every character. An item might be difficult to find after scouring the area, and the significance of interactive items is not always made obvious. During the game you will also switch characters between Wallace and Gromit. The camera movement and angle are quite good and in a way to give you that cinematic feel which in my opinion keeps you in the game.

A Wallace and Gromit game is quite interesting to have and this chapter is action packed with mind blowing puzzles and endless hours of fun. The story and the plot are very well planned and also funny and interesting. The only thing to comment on is that maybe some people would have liked more places to explore… as at the moment you are just limited to your house and West Wallaby Street, which we think will be compensated in the other episodes. Apart from that the story of the Fright of the Bumblebees is quite funny and enjoyable.

Confounding puzzles aside, “Fright of the Bumblebees” functions nicely as an adventure game for just about any audience or age group. The humor is varied, the gameplay is accessible, and the challenge is substantial without being frustrating. Buy it, enjoy it, and wait for the next few episodes to reveal themselves.
